One way that I’ve tried to cope since my late partner’s sudden death in January is through writing. I’m a freelance writer of short stories, personal essays, and journalism on the arts. I have been writing a letter to Sue and that’s currently over 12,000 words, making it the longest single piece I’ve ever written. After having an emotional breakdown in a grocery store after seeing some food items she especially liked, I came home and wrote a short story based on that painful experience. None of this writing brings her back and sometimes it conjures painful feelings. But it gives me something to do with my overwhelming emotions. Here’s a personal essay I wrote about Sue and our relationship not long after she died:

And here’s my short story based on my grocery store breakdown:

I hope some members will find some relatable moments in the essay and story.
